The ” worst-case scenario” has occurred and the bicycle is no longer in its old place – what to do?
First of all – keep calm and think!
It is important after the theft, that you stay calm. Excitement does not help anyone. Better you should make sure again, where you have parked your bike last. Sometimes it stands only one street further or a friend has borrowed it for short term.
Locating the current position with CyLock
CyLock helps you to locate it. Even if the monitoring was not previously “armed”, your bike can still be located using the ‘Bikefinder’ function via mobile and GPS. By calling the police, the bike can then be found and the criminal “caught”.
The CyLock app is constantly being developed further. For example, an “export function” is planned for forwarding the current position e.g. to the police.
Compiling documents
Before you go to the police, you should gather as much information and special features about the bicycle as possible. Especially pictures, codes and the frame number are helpful.
This is what the ‘Bikepass’ in the CyLock App is for – it contains all relevant information about your bike – including a picture. For this “just in case” we have integrated an extra “export function” for the Bikepass. This allows you to print out the bike pass, save it or forward it directly to third parties (police, insurance company etc.).
It also helps the police and insurance companies to note down everything about the course of events in keywords and to document and keep evidence such as a broken lock.
Report to the police
If a bicycle disappears, immediately report the theft to the police (technical term: “”police property search”) – either at the scene of the theft or to the police where the stolen bicycle is suspected. The “Bikefinder” function of CyLock helps to determine the location.
Not least, in order to obtain possible insurance cover, do not give it up because you think there is no chance of success! If the frame number of the bicycle is known, the chances of actually getting the stolen bike back are not that bad. In some cases, the stolen person assumes that the police will only search for insured bicycles. This is wrong! It is irrelevant for the police’s search work whether the bicycle is insured or uninsured, expensive or cheap. With the Bikepass in our App, you can now give the police as accurate a report as possible about what exactly was stolen.
Here, the more information the better. It is very important to contact the police at the place of the theft, because that is where the likelihood of it reappearing is naturally the highest. The police will then also provide information on how to proceed.
Contact insurance
If the bicycle has been stolen from the storage room or garage, the theft may be covered by your household insurance (just to be on the safe side, read the “exceptions” in the small print of your own household insurance!)
There is a chance (depending on the contract) that they will pay for possible damage (or at least part of it) and refund the value of the bike. A separate bicycle insurance is of course the best way to get adequate compensation.
We have an extra attractive insurance offer on our homepage, which can be used by everyone. Just take a look – it’s worth it!
Unfortunately, insurance companies only pay if the bike was secured with a good lock at the time of the crime. It is best to leave the receipt/invoice from the lock as proof at home.
